Zelensky Open to Resignation for Peace
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed his willingness to resign from his position if it could pave the way for peace in Ukraine. During a forum held in Kyiv on Sunday, he stated, “If there is peace for Ukraine, if you really need me to leave my post, I am ready… I can exchange it for NATO.” This reflects his commitment to prioritizing the security of his nation over his political career. He further emphasized, “I am focusing on security today and not in 20 years’ time. I don’t plan to be in power for 10 years.”
These remarks come in the wake of former President Donald Trump labeling Zelensky as a “dictator” for postponing elections, which are currently suspended under martial law in Ukraine due to the ongoing conflict.
Intensified Attacks as Invasion Anniversary Approaches
In a concerning escalation, Russia launched over 200 drones targeting Ukraine overnight, coinciding with the impending third anniversary of Moscow’s invasion, set for Monday. Zelensky reported on social media that a staggering 267 strike drones were deployed, marking it as “the largest attack since Iranian drones began hitting Ukrainian cities and villages.” Ukraine’s air force successfully intercepted 138 drones across 13 regions, while an additional 119 drones were lost before reaching their intended destinations. The air force also noted that three ballistic missiles were fired during the onslaught.
In the city of Kryvyi Rih, the local military administration confirmed that one individual lost their life due to a missile strike.
Trump’s Envoy Discusses Relations with Putin
In another development, Steve Witkoff, who served as Trump’s Middle East envoy, revealed that he had a “positive, constructive meeting” with Russian President Vladimir Putin during a recent visit to Moscow. Speaking to CNN, Witkoff noted the importance of fostering relationships with the leaders of both nations involved in the conflict, stating, “The only way you’re going to end the carnage is if you have a relationship with the leaders of both countries that are involved.”
US Seeks Access to Ukraine’s Rare Earth Minerals
The United States has formally requested access to Ukraine’s rare earth minerals, including vital resources such as lithium and uranium, as a form of “compensation” for the extensive support it has provided to the war-torn nation. Trump hinted at this arrangement, suggesting that Ukraine “essentially agreed” to transfer its natural resources in exchange for assistance. He remarked, “I told them [Ukraine] that I want the equivalent of like $500 billion (£397 billion) worth of rare earth,” adding, “And they’ve essentially agreed to do that so at least we don’t feel stupid.”
Initially resistant to these demands, Zelensky softened his stance, stating on Sunday that “we are ready to speak about minerals” with the United States. He affirmed, “We are ready to share,” but insisted that for any agreement to materialize, the US must compel Putin to “end this war.”
Witkoff expressed optimism that Ukraine would finalize a deal this week granting the United States access to its mineral resources. He remarked, “He’s not wavering anymore,” referring to Zelensky, and added, “I think there’s a reason he’s not wavering. It’s because he realizes that we have done so much and that that agreement belongs being signed.”
