UK Weather Forecast: A Dramatic Temperature Drop Ahead

Temperatures across the United Kingdom are poised to plunge by a staggering 10°C next week, with meteorologists predicting a distinctly chillier feel during the days ahead. This shift in weather patterns will follow a remarkably dry and mild start to March, which has allowed many to bask in warmth and sunshine.

For instance, this Saturday, the historic city of York is expected to experience pleasant highs of 17°C under clear skies. However, in stark contrast, temperatures in York will plummet to just 7°C next week, causing it to feel even colder than the numbers indicate, according to the Met Office.

Meanwhile, Lincoln, which enjoyed temperatures soaring to 16°C on Thursday, is forecasted for a rather cool 7°C next Wednesday, which is three degrees below the seasonal average.

The Met Office has remarked, “It’s very mild out there at the moment for many of us, but signs of a change are on the horizon for next week.” They further noted, “Temperatures are expected to dip below the seasonal average, bringing a chillier atmosphere—though there will still be moments of sunshine.”

Currently, the high teen temperatures are significantly above normal for this time of year, when the mercury typically hovers around 10°C. The record for the warmest March day was set in 1997, when temperatures soared to 25.6°C in Cornwall. If the temperatures reach 17°C this Thursday, it will mark the hottest day of the year so far.

Interestingly, several areas in the UK are expected to be warmer than parts of Spain in the coming days. Barcelona, for example, is forecasted to see highs of 13°C.

Upcoming Weather Challenges

However, the weather tables are set to turn next week, as Barcelona is anticipated to experience highs of 17°C on Tuesday. Prior to this significant drop in temperatures, more rain showers are on the way. Thursday evening will see a thick blanket of clouds rolling in from the west, bringing with it spells of rain, with the possibility of heavy bursts overnight.

Rain is expected to linger over parts of Wales and northern England throughout Friday. The Met Office commented, “Many across England and Wales have recently enjoyed a break from rain, but some will need to retrieve their raincoats tomorrow.” They added, “A cold front sweeping across the UK will bring spells of rain, which may be heavy and potentially thundery at times. These weather systems will push northward throughout the day.”
