Tragic Incident: British Man Dies After Muay Thai Kickboxing Match in Thailand
A British man, aged 30, has tragically lost his life after collapsing moments after participating in his very first Muay Thai kickboxing match in Thailand. The unfortunate event unfolded on Friday night at the renowned Samui International Muay Thai Stadium, located on the popular tourist destination of Koh Samui.
The match commenced around 9:30 PM local time, but was abruptly halted in the third round after the Brit was reportedly struck on the right side of his rib cage. According to local news outlet Khaosod English, he managed to leave the ring and removed his gloves, but soon after, he began to feel unwell while attempting to unwrap his hand bandages.
Witnesses recounted that he started experiencing severe muscle tension, struggled to breathe, and displayed signs of distress as his eyes began to roll back. Although he was still conscious at that moment, he unfortunately collapsed shortly thereafter, with reports indicating that his heart had stopped beating.
In a desperate bid to save him, his trainer performed CPR until emergency services arrived and transported him to Thai International Hospital, located less than two miles from the venue. Despite the efforts of the medical team, he was pronounced dead at 11 PM local time.
An autopsy has since been conducted at Koh Samui Hospital, and local authorities have initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.
Muay Thai, often referred to as “the art of eight limbs,” incorporates the use of fists, feet, shins, and elbows in combat. This ancient martial art has significant historical roots in Thai culture, dating back to 1560, when it was adopted for military training under the reign of King Naresuan.
In earlier times, traditional rope-bound knuckles were used instead of gloves; however, multiple fatalities prompted the switch to padded gloves in the 1990s. Despite its popularity as a spectator sport throughout Thailand, Muay Thai continues to be notoriously perilous and has previously led to tragic outcomes.
