Tragic Bus Crash into Icy River in Turin
In a shocking incident captured on video, a tour coach lost control and crashed into an icy river in Turin while attempting to reverse. The disturbing footage reveals the bus moving backward, tipping precariously before plunging into the frigid waters below.
The coach, which was nearly swallowed by the river, was driven by 64-year-old Nicola Di Carlo, who tragically died in the accident. Several pedestrians walking along the scenic River Po were injured as they witnessed the heartbreaking event unfold in front of them.
As the vehicle rolled towards the edge of the river, it struck three pedestrians. Di Carlo, who owned the transport company, had previously driven a group of primary school children from Milan on a school excursion earlier that day. One eyewitness recounted, “It hit us while reversing, then struck the wall and plunged into the river. We were on foot, and the bus just brushed past my aunt and cousin. Thankfully, they escaped with only a few bruises.”
Quick to react, rowers from a nearby club were the first responders at the scene. They jumped into the icy water and bravely pulled Di Carlo from the submerged vehicle. Witness Filippo Camedda shared, “The rowers acted incredibly fast. We provided them with a hammer to break the windows of the coach. By the time they managed to get him to shore, it appeared he was already gone.”
Another witness described the incident as unfolding “in a fraction of a second.” Despite the immediate attempts to resuscitate Di Carlo, his heart could not be restarted. Later that night, firefighters successfully recovered the coach, which will undergo a thorough examination as part of the ongoing investigation.
While the autopsy results are pending, preliminary reports suggest that Di Carlo may have experienced a medical emergency prior to the crash. Turin’s mayor, Stefano Lo Russo, expressed his condolences, stating, “The consequences could have been even worse. Right now, our thoughts and sympathies go out to the victim’s family.”
This tragic event echoes a series of bus accidents that have recently made headlines. In February, a bus in Bolivia tragically fell into a vast ravine, resulting in the deaths of at least 30 individuals and injuring 15 others. The passenger bus was reportedly speeding and lost control before plunging into a half-mile-deep abyss. Similarly, in October, another bus in Saint Petersburg crashed into two cars and a safety barrier before falling into a 10-foot-deep murky river, claiming the lives of seven people. The driver, who had fallen asleep at the wheel, received a six-year prison sentence.
Just days ago, three individuals were injured when a double-decker bus crashed near a popular tourist destination in London, prompting swift action from emergency services at the scene close to St Paul’s Cathedral.
