A Remarkable Find: A 1991 Volkswagen Passat at Auction

A pristine Volkswagen Passat, in showroom condition and boasting strikingly low mileage, has recently captured attention at auction, selling for an astonishing price. This modern classic saloon, which first hit the production line in 1991—now 34 years ago—was auctioned by the renowned classic car auction house, Collecting Cars.

This immaculate VW Passat, which recently changed hands, has recorded less than 800 miles on the odometer. Despite its considerable age, the car looks as if it just left the showroom. It is believed that the vehicle was originally gifted to the father of the individual who later ordered it, and it remained underutilized for more than two decades before being sold.

The car, a 2.0-litre GL model, was sold for a remarkable £11,250. The listing described it as a “dependable and practical modern classic saloon,” offered by its second owner, who had cherished it for over 13 years. First registered in August 1991, this unique Passat shows a mere 791 miles on the clock.

In a conversation with Sun Motors, a spokesperson for Collecting Cars provided further insight into this extraordinary automobile. They noted, “The car was ordered new through a main dealer franchise in Glasgow and was built to an impressive specification. It boasts rare options including:

  • Full ruffled soft leather interior
  • Leather-trimmed steering wheel
  • Polished ‘Le Castellet’ alloy wheels
  • Rear spoiler
  • Upgraded Blaupunkt Heidelberg cassette player with tape storage unit

“It is thought the car may have originally been a gift for the father of the person who ordered it. It was only sparingly used for over 20 years before changing hands, with documented evidence verifying its incredibly low mileage.”

Records indicate that the VW Passat had a mere 120 miles registered by August 2002, and, astonishingly, by October 2019, the mileage had only slightly increased to 561 miles. This remarkable vehicle was sold earlier this month in Brampton, Cumbria, for £11,250.

In a related discovery, an urban explorer recently found two iconic cars from the 1990s, albeit in a state of neglect, hidden away in an old garage. YouTube sensation Colin Smith, known for his channel The Bearded Explorer, specializes in exploration videos where he often uncovers abandoned classic cars.

In a recent episode, Colin stumbled upon two dilapidated Ford Escort RS Cosworths—vehicles celebrated by car enthusiasts for their impressive performance and unique aesthetics. During his exploration through a dense wooded area, he chanced upon these cars, which appeared to be stored in an abandoned garage cluttered with discarded items.

Inside this forgotten space, the two Escorts—one in blue and the other in white—were parked facing each other, alongside an old Mini. The Escort RS Cosworth is a highly sought-after modern classic, representing a pivotal era in rallying history.

In other automotive news, Peugeot has announced plans to reinvigorate its lineup with a sporty hot hatch variant, with a GTi version of the e-208 reportedly in development, according to their new chief, Alain Favey. This French manufacturer, part of Stellantis, has not had a GTi model in its repertoire since the previous generation Peugeot 308 was discontinued in 2021.
