The View: A Culinary Experience Above the City
As the elevator ascends, the familiar sensation of your ears popping signals your arrival at The View, an exquisite revolving bar and restaurant perched on the 47th and 48th floors of the New York Marriott Marquis. On a recent Saturday evening, the atmosphere buzzed with excitement as families, groups of friends, and couples indulged in Champagne while savoring lavish seafood towers, all while taking in the breathtaking panorama of the city skyline.
Every 45 minutes, patrons are treated to a mesmerizing rotation of the cityscape, providing the perfect backdrop to enjoy a cocktail and unwind. After being shuttered in 2020, The View has made a triumphant return, marking a new chapter in the legacy of revolving restaurants, thanks to the vision of renowned restaurateur Danny Meyer and acclaimed architect David Rockwell.
Gone are the days of outdated pleather dining chairs and garish carpets; the space has been transformed into a chic setting adorned with blue velvet banquettes, a polished black marble bar, and stunning Art Deco-style glass installations. This modern aesthetic provides a fresh and inviting atmosphere that enhances the dining experience.
“When else is someone going to say, ‘Would you like to do a revolving restaurant in the theater district?’” remarked Meyer, reflecting on the unique opportunity presented to him.
Joseph Mirrone, a former New Yorker visiting with his son for a post-theater coffee and dessert, encapsulated the allure of The View, stating, “This is one of the best views. You can sit in one spot and the whole city revolves around you.”
Meyer, who cherishes his own nostalgic memories of Stouffer’s Top of the Riverfront, a revolving restaurant in St. Louis, was enthusiastic about reimagining this dining concept. “When Marriott approached us, it felt like, OK, well, that’s something we’ve never done before,” he shared. This innovative venture not only revitalizes a classic dining experience but also reestablishes The View as a must-visit destination in the heart of New York City.
