Pope Francis’ Health Update: A Night in the Hospital
Pope Francis experienced a “peaceful night” in the hospital following an “isolated breathing crisis” as he continues to battle double pneumonia, according to a statement released by the Vatican on Saturday. This health episode, which occurred on Friday evening, resulted in vomiting and a “sudden worsening of [the Pope’s] respiratory condition” after an “isolated bronchospasm”.
To assist with his breathing, the Pope’s lungs had to be aspirated, which involved clearing them of vomit, and he was provided with supplemental oxygen through a face mask. On Saturday morning, the Vatican provided an update, stating that Pope Francis, who is 88 years old, had a “peaceful night and is resting”. However, they noted that a period of 24 to 48 hours is required to properly assess his clinical condition.
The pontiff was initially admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on February 14, after experiencing significant breathing difficulties. Subsequent medical evaluations revealed that he was suffering from double pneumonia, accompanied by kidney complications, placing him in a critical condition at that time. Prior to the respiratory crisis on Friday night, statements from the Vatican indicated that there had been some improvement in his overall condition, although physicians emphasized that he remains in a precarious state.
In light of his health struggles, Catholics around the world have been urged to pray for the Pope, who has been unable to deliver the traditional Angelus prayer in person for several weeks now. In a heartfelt message released last week, he expressed his gratitude to worshipers for their “prayers of comfort” during this challenging time.
Double pneumonia is a serious condition that can cause inflammation and scarring in both lungs, significantly hindering the ability to breathe. Pope Francis has a history of respiratory issues; he developed pleurisy as a young adult and underwent surgery to remove part of a lung, making him particularly vulnerable to lung infections.
Over the past few years, the Pope has faced a variety of health challenges, including:
- Lung inflammation that prevented him from attending COP28 in Dubai last November
- Abdominal surgery in June
- Treatment for bronchitis in March
As the world watches and prays for his recovery, Pope Francis remains a figure of resilience and faith.
