Paul Scholes: ‘It’s About Time Manchester United Caught Up’
Manchester United have reportedly turned their attention to an exciting new talent who has captured the admiration of Ralf Rangnick. The player in question is Oghenetejiri Adejenughure, an 18-year-old striker currently making waves with FC Liefering, the reserve team of RB Salzburg, where he is enjoying his first full professional season.
Adejenughure, a product of Rapid Wien’s academy, joined RB Salzburg’s youth setup in 2021 and made his professional debut in August. Since then, he has made a significant impact, featuring in eighteen matches this season, where he has netted two goals and provided one assist. His exceptional performances have not gone unnoticed, attracting interest from a host of top European clubs, including Manchester City, AC Milan, and Borussia Dortmund, alongside Manchester United, according to the Daily Star.
Not only has Adejenughure been a standout in the Austrian youth national teams, but he has also earned accolades from Rangnick, the head coach of the first team and a former manager of Manchester United. The Red Devils have already initiated contact with Adejenughure’s representatives, first reaching out in June 2024, following his impressive four-goal haul in four matches during the European U17 Championships.
At the youth level, Adejenughure proved to be a formidable force, finding the back of the net every 83 minutes for Salzburg’s U18 side during the 2023-24 season. Standing tall at 6 feet 1 inch, he is renowned for his pace and finishing abilities, drawing comparisons to notable strikers like Victor Osimhen. His skill set is impressively well-rounded for someone of his age, also showcasing competent dribbling and aerial prowess.

United are keen to avoid repeating past mistakes, particularly after passing up the chance to sign a young Erling Haaland for just £17 million during his time at Molde in Norway. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who managed Haaland at Molde, had recommended the young striker to the club, recognizing his potential early on. Solskjaer reflected, “It would have been a bargain. It was the club’s decision to not go for him then.”
If Adejenughure makes the switch to Old Trafford, he would make history as the second Austrian player to don the Manchester United jersey, following Marcel Sabitzer, who spent half a season on loan at the club in 2023.
