Takeaway Enthusiasts Spend Over £51,000 in a Lifetime
According to recent research, takeaway enthusiasts are splurging an astonishing £51,000 over their lifetimes treating themselves to delightful meals. A survey conducted with 2,000 adults revealed that those who indulge in takeaways spend, on average, just over £60 each month for food delivery.
This monthly expenditure accumulates to a staggering total of £51,035.92 over the average life expectancy of 80 years. The study highlighted that residents in London and Glasgow are the top spenders, shelling out approximately £23 per person weekly on takeout.
Interestingly, Fridays have emerged as the most popular day for takeaways, with 33% of respondents treating themselves after a long week of work. Saturdays follow closely behind, with 25% opting for indulgence on that day as well. However, it’s noteworthy that 51% of adults feel they cannot fully afford all the takeaways they would ideally enjoy.
In light of these findings, Asda has launched a campaign against the high costs associated with takeaway pizzas, which ranked highly among Brits’ favorite takeaway options. To promote this initiative, Asda set up a pizza pop-up shop in Glasgow, strategically located outside a popular national pizza takeaway outlet. This initiative encourages passersby to consider supermarket alternatives, showcasing their £5.98 meal deal for two.
Adam Forster, the buying manager for Asda’s Pizza Counter, stated, “In these challenging times, many people want to enjoy the takeaway experience without the hefty price tag. Whether it’s a Friday night indulgence or a midweek treat, ordering in has always been a cherished pleasure.”
He added, “However, due to rising living costs and tighter household budgets, more individuals are finding it necessary to cut back, even on the small luxuries they love most. It’s a tough decision, but we believe shoppers shouldn’t have to compromise.”
The study revealed that 53% of adults view takeaways as a treat to look forward to, while one in three respondents order takeaways to celebrate special occasions. Additionally, 70% of participants confessed they often don’t understand why pizzas can be so expensive when ordered for delivery. Alarmingly, nearly a fifth (19%) admitted they frequently have to reheat their takeaway meals after they arrive.
Adam Forster noted that many customers are becoming more selective about their ordering habits, saying, “Instead of spontaneous midweek meals, they’re reserving takeaways for special occasions or sharing costs with family and friends. The love for takeaways remains strong, but consumers are adapting their habits to ensure they can continue to enjoy them within their budget.”
Asda aims to provide the experience of enjoying takeaways without the associated costs, allowing locals to snag two pizzas and a drink for just £5.98.
