Keir Starmer Reaffirms Commitment to Ukraine Amid Ongoing Conflict

Sir Keir Starmer has once again emphasized his steadfast support for Ukraine, expressing his determination to explore pathways that will bring an end to Russia’s unjust war. He is committed to ensuring that Ukraine achieves a lasting peace founded on its sovereignty and security. During a significant meeting on Saturday evening, Starmer welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to Downing Street and subsequently engaged in discussions with US President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron.

These conversations followed the Prime Minister’s assertion that Ukraine has the “full backing across the United Kingdom,” demonstrating a unified front in support of the nation at war.

Strengthening Ties and Support for Ukraine

Starmer conveyed to President Zelensky that Britain stands with Ukraine “for as long as it may take.” Accompanying the Prime Minister was Chancellor Rachel Reeves, who participated in the signing of a £2.26 billion loan aimed at bolstering Ukraine’s defense capabilities. This agreement, announced previously in October, will be funded through frozen Russian assets. President Zelensky later took to social media to remark, “This is true justice – the one who started the war must be the one to pay.”

The upcoming summit on Sunday will gather international leaders in London, concluding a week filled with vigorous diplomatic efforts by Starmer. His activities included advocating for increased UK defense spending and engaging in talks with President Trump in Washington to bolster both UK and European security.

On Friday evening, the Prime Minister held additional discussions with both President Trump and President Zelensky, reflecting on the controversial events that transpired during the presidents’ recent meeting in Washington, D.C., where Trump and Vice President Vance confronted Zelensky in a manner previously unseen.

Sunday’s summit will witness the presence of Italy’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, at Downing Street, followed by a gathering in central London with leaders from various nations, including France, Germany, Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Turkey, Canada, Finland, Sweden, Czechia, and Romania. The Turkish Foreign Minister, NATO Secretary General, and the presidents of the European Commission and European Council are also expected to attend.

Starmer has been unequivocal in his stance that negotiations concerning Ukraine must include Ukraine itself. This commitment was reiterated during his warm welcome of President Zelensky at Downing Street on Saturday evening, just ahead of the summit. Key discussion points at the summit will include:

  • Strengthening Ukraine’s current military position through ongoing support and enhanced economic pressure on Russia.
  • Establishing a robust and enduring agreement that ensures permanent peace in Ukraine, enabling the country to deter and defend against any future Russian aggression.
  • Outlining next steps for planning strong security guarantees for Ukraine.

Following the announcement earlier this week that the UK intends to allocate 2.5% of its GDP towards defense by 2027, the Prime Minister will emphasize the necessity for Europe to fulfill its responsibilities to enhance collective security.

In response to the situation, the Liberal Democrats have called for the Army’s personnel to be restored to a total of 82,000 troops. This follows a reduction initiated by the Conservative government in 2021 that cut the Army’s size to 72,500. They advocate that this restoration aligns with the commitment to increase defense spending to 2.5% of the UK’s economic output by 2027.

The UK has consistently expressed its willingness to support Ukraine’s future security, even considering troop deployments on the ground. Starmer stated, “Three years on from Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine, we are at a critical juncture. Today, I will reaffirm my unwavering support for Ukraine and double down on my commitment to provide capacity, training, and aid to Ukraine, positioning it for the strongest possible defense.”

He added, “In partnership with our allies, we must intensify our preparations for a European element of security guarantees while continuing our discussions with the United States. We have a unique opportunity to unite in pursuit of a just and lasting peace in Ukraine that secures its sovereignty and security. Now is the time for us to come together to guarantee the best outcome for Ukraine, safeguard European security, and secure our collective future.”
