Idris Elba Takes a Bold Step into Formula E and Politics
Hollywood sensation Idris Elba is making headlines not only for his role in the entertainment industry but also for his investment in a brand new Formula E team. This move reflects a deep passion for motorsport, but it also aligns with his commitment to social causes, revealing a ‘deep and personal’ reason behind his decision.
At 52, the talented actor, renowned for his portrayal of the bad boy cop Luther in the acclaimed BBC series, is also being considered for a significant political role. The Labour Party has set its sights on Idris as their preferred candidate to succeed Sadiq Khan as the next Mayor of London.
Away from the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, Idris has emerged as a passionate campaigner. He has collaborated closely with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to tackle the pressing issue of knife crime, demonstrating his dedication to improving community safety.
Labour insiders have expressed that Idris is “top of our wish list” for the upcoming mayoral election. A senior party source shared with The Sun on Sunday: “Idris has star appeal, but he is also a thoughtful political campaigner. Labour has a choice about who to nominate for the role in London. We can either select a Labour insider and attempt to elevate their profile, or we can choose someone already famous who aligns with our values. Idris would be at the absolute top of our wish list.”
Born and raised in Hackney, East London, Idris continues to reside in the area, maintaining a strong connection to his roots. He joined Sir Keir at No 10 last year for an initiative aimed at preventing young people from being drawn into gang violence. The actor has advocated for measures such as blunting the points of knives to help reduce the tragic loss of young lives to stabbings.
Another Labour insider commented, “Idris is a long shot, but there are discussions within the party about him.” With Sadiq Khan expected to step down ahead of the next mayoral election, likely scheduled for 2028, the race is heating up.
In addition to Idris, other notable figures such as Dragons’ Den star Deborah Meaden, Labour MPs Dawn Butler, Stella Creasy, and Rosena Allin-Khan, as well as Foreign Secretary David Lammy, are all being considered as potential candidates.
