Historic Pub Set to Close After Nearly 500 Years of Service
The renowned Hole in the Wall pub, a beloved establishment in Cornwall, is preparing to close its doors after nearly five centuries of serving the community. First opened in 1540, this iconic venue has become a significant part of local history and culture.
Landlord Richard Rossendale-Cook has expressed his deep sadness over the decision, attributing the closure to rising operational costs that have made it unsustainable to continue. In his own words, he stated, “I’m very very sad; of course, I’d like to carry on. But unless somebody comes up – a Russian oligarch or someone who will give me £360,000 to pay off the bill, you are going to shut and that’s the end of it.”
The pub, which is owned by the brewery that supplies its beer, is facing closure as Mr. Rossendale-Cook can no longer afford the increasing rent. In a heartfelt message posted on Facebook, the Hole in the Wall team said, “Thank you all for your loyal custom over the years, with many great memories created, to add to the centuries’ more storied history here at the Hole.”
Locals have responded with a mix of nostalgia and disappointment. One user lamented, “It will be greatly missed,” while another noted that the closure is “a shame for the community but inevitable with the cost of living crisis.”
The charm of the Torquay pub lies in its unique features, including charming cobbled floors and a low-beam ceiling. Historically, it was a favored haunt for smugglers and pirates when it first opened its doors in the 15th century, adding to its rich tapestry of stories.
The impending closure of historic pubs like the Hole in the Wall has sparked concerns about the future of such establishments without government intervention. Recent research has highlighted a troubling trend, revealing that over 400 pubs across the UK closed in the past year. Among these was a branch of the iconic Hard Rock Cafe in Newcastle, which had only opened in May 2021.
As if this were not enough, pubs across the country are bracing for changes in licensing laws that will take effect tomorrow. The once-allowed takeaway pints, introduced during the pandemic, will no longer be available for sale, further complicating the landscape for pub owners.
The Hole in the Wall Pub in Torquay represents more than just a place to drink; it is a vital part of the community’s heritage, and its closure marks the end of an era.
