Emotional Moment: Man Utd Icon Roy Keane Moved by Ian Wright’s Interview
MANCHESTER UNITED legend Roy Keane is widely recognized as one of the toughest players in Premier League history. However, there was a poignant moment when he revealed a more emotional side during a live TV segment while complimenting his friend and colleague Ian Wright.
Back in February 2022, ITV aired a heartfelt interview with then-Boreham Wood striker Adrian Clifton as part of its coverage of the FA Cup fourth round. Clifton had been mentored by Wright for over 13 years after they first crossed paths while filming the documentary ‘Football Behind Bars’. Having spent time in a young offender’s institution, Clifton accepted guidance from the Arsenal legend, which helped him navigate his way into professional football.
The duo had a heartfelt reunion three years prior to the interview, just before Boreham Wood’s FA Cup clash with Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium. As Keane and Wright watched the footage live on TV while working as pundits, Keane became visibly emotional. Reaching over to touch Wright’s knee, the United icon expressed his feelings, saying: “Brilliant, very powerful. Great story, well done, Wrighty. You gave him a bit of hope. Brilliant stuff. Absolutely brilliant.”
Known for his no-nonsense demeanor both on and off the pitch, former Premier League hardman Keane has built a reputation over the years that reflects his toughness. However, this week, he shared that he also experienced a wave of emotions after receiving a prestigious award. The 53-year-old was honored as Pundit of the Year at the British Sports Journalism Awards on Monday.
In the latest episode of the Stick to Football podcast, presented by Sky Bet, Keane candidly remarked on the recognition, stating: “I feel quite emotional at winning the Pundit of the Year award at the Sports Journalists’ Association Awards. It’s nice being recognized, but I don’t have the ego about wanting to win the award – it’s all about working as a team. We’re a team on the podcast, and I’m also part of a team at Sky Sports.”
