In an exciting turn of events, Gerwyn Price has voiced his concerns regarding the recent changes to the PDC ranking system following a significant increase in the prize money for the World Championship. As the current World No. 12, Price claimed the prestigious title at Alexandra Palace in 2021, and he’s eager to see improvements across the board in the prize fund for all events.

Luke Littler, the rising star of darts, secured a remarkable £500,000 for his maiden World Championship title earlier this year. The PDC has announced that the winner of the upcoming World Championship will walk away with a staggering £1 million, a substantial rise from the previous amount of £500,000.

Despite his recent success, Price is not entirely pleased with the PDC’s decision to boost the World Championship’s prize fund. He fears that such a large sum could disrupt the Order of Merit rankings. Price stated, “It’s only one tournament heavy. As bad as my last year has been, even though I’ve started well this year, I could go on to win the World Championship and be world number one.” Currently, Luke Humphries, the 2023 world champion, holds the top position in the world rankings.

However, Littler’s impressive start to the season suggests he may soon claim the No. 1 spot. While Price supports the increase in prize money as a reflection of darts’ growing popularity, he believes it is crucial for the PDC to enhance the prize funds across all tournaments. He emphasized, “They’ve upped the Worlds [money], but they need to up everything else. Otherwise, they need to change the points. It’s not fair if someone wins the Worlds and they are world number one for two years. I will happily have the million. But they need to change the ranking points.”
