Drivers aged 70 and over should be aware of an important change regarding their driving licenses. If they do not take the necessary steps to update their license, they will find themselves banned from operating two specific types of vehicles. This regulation stems from a lesser-known policy implemented by the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency), which results in the automatic loss of certain entitlements.
Upon reaching the age of 70, there are three crucial steps that a driver must take concerning their license:
- First, they are required to renew their driving license.
- Second, the renewal must occur every three years thereafter.
- Third, they will automatically lose their C1 and D1 entitlements.
The C1 entitlement permits drivers to operate medium-sized vehicles with a Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) ranging from 3,500kg to 7,500kg. Meanwhile, the D1 entitlement allows drivers to operate minibuses that accommodate up to 16 passengers, provided these vehicles do not exceed a length of eight meters and can tow a trailer weighing up to 750kg.
How to Avoid Being Caught Out
To prevent any issues, it is essential for drivers over the age of 70 to be proactive. The DVLA will send out two important forms 56 days prior to the expiration of your driving license. These include:
- An “application for renewal of lorry and bus entitlement” (form D47P).
- A “medical examination report” form (D4).
Renewing or changing a bus or lorry license is free of charge. After receiving the forms, the next step is to complete form D47P. Following this, it is necessary to consult with a doctor who will fill out the medical examination report. Additionally, an optometrist or optician can provide the required vision assessments.
As part of the application process, elderly drivers must also complete a D2 application form alongside the D4 medical examination report. Please note that charges may apply, and the renewal processes can vary in Northern Ireland.
Once all forms are completed, they should be sent by post to the DVLA. It’s important to understand that this procedure does not involve renewing license photos. For further details on the renewal process, drivers can find additional information on how to renew their license.
Failure to renew the C1 or D1 entitlements means that drivers will no longer be able to operate medium-sized vehicles or minibuses, which could significantly impact their mobility and independence.
