Discovering the Serenity of a Spanish Island: Laid-Back Beach Resorts and Mild Winter Escapes

Gran Canaria All-Inclusive: A Tropical Paradise

Gran Canaria All-Inclusive: A Tropical Paradise

How many litres of water does it take to nourish a single banana plant? The answer is approximately 23. This intriguing fact struck me while I savored one of the sweetest and freshest bananas I’ve ever had, momentarily distracting me from the tour guide’s insights.

Gran Canaria is renowned not only for its winter sun and stunning coastline but also as an affordable holiday destination. A visit to the banana plantation in Trasmontaña is just one of the many complimentary activities available to guests at the Paradisus by Melia hotel. While the sweet fruit may not be the first thing that comes to mind when considering the Canary Islands, they have a rich tradition that plays a vital role in the island’s identity.

With a population of fewer than a million, this sun-soaked volcanic island, located just 93 miles from Africa’s northwestern coast, prides itself on its self-sufficiency. The locals proudly recycle seawater to supply both residents and hotels, while also cultivating enough bananas to meet local demand.

The banana plantation visit is just one of the various free activities offered to guests staying at Paradisus by Melia. Other excursions include trips to a rum distillery and the Gran Canaria Museum. This laid-back beachfront resort emphasizes local culture and tradition, hosting activities that showcase the island’s natural beauty. The lobby and lounge areas are adorned with ceramics from the indigenous Guanche people, who inhabited the island long before European arrival.

Stargazing is a must-do in this part of the world, and it’s free at the resort’s on-site observatory, equipped with two powerful telescopes. The Canary Islands boast some of the darkest night skies globally, making them an ideal destination for aspiring astronomers. It was the perfect way to conclude my last night, learning about the shimmering planets from an expert guide before gazing through a telescope strong enough to reveal craters on the moon.

This blend of culture and relaxation is precisely why my mother and I chose the Paradisus by Melia Hotel. After all, when it’s a delightful 22°C in the midst of winter, who wouldn’t relish lounging on a sunbed while enjoying cocktails delivered right to your side?

Arranging a package trip with British Airways Holidays simplified the process of organizing flights, accommodations, and activities, integrating everything into one all-inclusive offer. While I usually hesitate to opt for all-inclusive vacations—worried that I might tire of the dining options—this was not the case here. With seven restaurants to choose from, our appetites were continually satisfied with delectable Italian dishes, hearty salads, and fish prepared over a smoky charcoal grill. However, the highlight for me was the sushi at the hotel’s Lemon Fish, a unique Peruvian-Japanese-Mexican fusion restaurant (be sure to try the pisco sours if you enjoy cocktails).

During our dining experience, a talented saxophonist serenaded us, a common occurrence at this resort where musicians entertain guests throughout the day. We enjoyed soothing melodies from a harpist during breakfast and familiar hits from a cover band in the evening. Despite the resort being at 82% capacity during the half-term holidays, it never felt overcrowded.

Perhaps it was our booking into an adults-only room, granting access to The Retreat—exclusive areas for guests aged 16 and over. Retreat guests enjoy a separate pool with luxurious Bali beds, a sandy area with loungers facing the beach, and a bar serving refreshing piña coladas, spritzes, and soft drinks delivered by attentive waitstaff.

Even our basic Retreat room felt indulgent, featuring a freestanding bathtub, the most comfortable super king bed (ample enough for a family of four!), and modern conveniences like USB ports by the bed and a smart TV. Make sure to reserve a sea-view room to bask in sunshine for most of the day.

On our last morning, heeding the advice of fellow guests, we set our alarms early to stroll to the beach directly across from the hotel and witness the sunrise. To my surprise, we weren’t alone on the sand; locals, couples, and dog walkers had all gathered to watch as the orange glow broke over the ocean’s horizon, transforming the misty sky into deep shades of pink and hazy purple. Soon enough, the entire beach was bathed in the sun’s warmth.

With mornings starting like this, it’s easy to understand why this winter sun destination is a favorite among British travelers.
