At one point, the severity of her condition left her bedridden. Despite her struggles, Caragh had pursued a career in education, earning a degree in Geography from the University of St Andrews, but was forced to turn down what she described as her “dream job” at her former school in Manchester due to her health challenges.
Reflecting on this difficult decision, she shared, “I cried on the phone because I had to turn down the job and just had to say, ‘I’m really sorry, but I’m really not very well at the moment.’ I wanted to be the best teacher I could be.” After undergoing rigorous testing, Caragh finally received her lupus diagnosis, which clarified her health issues. “Being so poorly ended up being a blessing in disguise because I was able to get the diagnosis really quickly,” she explained.
Like many diagnosed at a young age, she faced fears about her future, worried about relationships and motherhood. “At the age of 25, you’re sat there being told everything and you’re thinking, ‘I’m never going to have a boyfriend. I’ve not had children yet.’ That was the sort of thing that was going through my head.” Fortunately, Caragh has been surrounded by a loving and supportive family, including her father, whose dry humor played a crucial role in helping her cope with her illness.
In light of the upcoming film titled Saipan, which will explore the infamous fallout between Roy and Mick McCarthy ahead of the 2002 World Cup, Caragh finds the prospect of a biopic about her father both surreal and intriguing. “I had no awareness of any of it, so it’ll be interesting to see what it’s like. But to be honest, my dad is very laid-back about it,” she said, noting how Roy casually mentioned the film’s production to the family.
