Luke Humphries Faces Setback in Belgian Darts Open
LUKE HUMPHRIES has responded to a fan’s critique claiming he is past his prime. The reigning world number one suffered a disappointing 6-1 defeat against Luke Littler in the final of Premier League Darts night eight this week.
Following this setback, Humphries was quick to address a fan who suggested his best days are behind him. After the match, the fan remarked, “Humphries’ prime has truly been and gone; when he loses the World Number One spot, I reckon we’re going to see him slowly but gradually fall down the rankings.”
The 30-year-old Humphries seemed taken aback by the comment, but he didn’t hesitate to set the record straight. He replied, “I’ve literally won two of the last four majors, you wally! A couple of bad weeks don’t define you. Remember, this happened last year at the start of the year, and look how it ended.”
Humphries went on to highlight his remarkable performance throughout 2023, which saw him ascend to the number one ranking and clinch the prestigious World Darts Championship title by triumphing in six tournaments. Among these victories were two major titles: the World Matchplay and the Players Championship. He also secured runner-up positions in the Premier League, World Grand Prix, and the UK Open.
His exceptional achievements have led him to amass an astonishing £1.8 million in prize money over the past two years, setting a record for the largest sum ever earned by a darts player.

Looking ahead, Humphries has the potential to become the first darts player to surpass the £2 million mark in earnings. However, he emphasized that it is the trophies that motivate him more than the monetary rewards. “Of course, it would be really nice to achieve that,” Humphries stated. “But it’s not like a goal that you’re fixated on. The prize money in darts is only going to increase in the coming years; I think everyone can see that.”
He added, “It’s likely going to become a common occurrence for players, so eventually, someone will reach the £2 million milestone, whether it’s me or not, but I’d certainly like to be the first.”
