Nicola Adams and Ella Baig Announce Split After Seven Years
Boxing champion and Strictly Come Dancing star Nicola Adams has officially parted ways with her girlfriend, Ella Baig. The couple, who had been together for an impressive seven years, have decided to separate amicably.
Nicola, 42, made history as the first woman to win an Olympic boxing gold medal, achieving this remarkable feat at the 2016 Rio Olympics. The couple is also parents to a two-year-old son, Taylor Nate, who was conceived through IVF using one of Nicola’s eggs.
A representative for Nicola shared the following statement: “Nicola and Ella have shared an incredible journey together, full of love, growth, and resilience. After much thoughtful reflection and important therapy work, they have made the difficult decision to separate. Their priority remains their son, Taylor, and they are committed to co-parenting with love and respect.”
Nicola, hailing from Leeds, followed her triumph at the 2012 London Olympics by winning another gold medal in Rio. She also held the title of flyweight world champion as a professional boxer in 2019. Additionally, Nicola made television history in 2020 when she and Strictly professional dancer Katya Jones became the first same-sex pairing on the beloved BBC show.
A source close to the couple revealed, “They really tried to make it work, especially for the sake of their son, and even went to couples’ therapy. However, they ultimately concluded that they were better off separating. They still have a lot of love for each other and cherish great memories, but are now focused on being exceptional co-parents.”
The pair began dating in 2018 after meeting on a night out and embarked on their journey to parenthood in 2020. The IVF process involved fertilizing one of Nicola’s eggs with the sperm of a donor who resembled Ella. Ella carried the baby and gave birth a month early via cesarean section, with Taylor weighing just 3 pounds and 14 ounces at birth.
In a heartfelt interview with Hello! magazine in 2022, Ella remarked on Taylor’s tenacity, stating, “He was a fighter in my stomach, and he’s definitely come out like that.”
Nicola has also highlighted the lack of parenting resources available for same-sex families, stating in a Vogue magazine interview, “The information is out there, but we really had to dig for it.” Her experiences as a parent continue to inspire her advocacy for greater inclusivity and support for diverse families.
