In recent months, Tesla’s sales in Canada have experienced a noticeable decline, a trend that many observers attribute to the controversial influence of Elon Musk during Donald Trump’s administration. Musk’s repeated disparagement of Canadian sovereignty has seemingly affected consumer sentiment and sales performance across the nation.
Despite these challenges, four Tesla dealerships reported an astonishing figure of 8,653 vehicles sold over a single weekend in January. This remarkable volume was sufficient for the company to qualify for CAD 43 million (approximately USD 30 million) in public funding through a program that was on the brink of expiration.
Now, the Canadian government is keen to investigate how Tesla managed to sell cars at such an extraordinary pace, which translates to an average of two vehicles per minute leaving their lots. This staggering rate implies that these four dealerships would have needed to operate continuously, 24 hours a day, from January 10 to January 12.
This surge in reported sales has led to a freeze on payments this month, following the appointment of Mark Carney as Prime Minister of Canada and the installation of a new Minister of Transport, who has mandated officials to “thoroughly examine each claim individually to determine their validity and eligibility.”
Minister Chrystia Freeland stated emphatically that “no payments will be made until we are confident that the applications are legitimate.” Although the grant program has now expired, Freeland has indicated that should a new program be introduced, Tesla vehicles would be ineligible for funding while the illegal and unjust tariffs imposed by the U.S. against Canada remain in place.
