‘Here There Are Blueberries’
This thought-provoking production by Tectonic Theater Project, renowned for “The Laramie Project,” delves into the chilling history of the Holocaust. The narrative begins with a haunting collection of photographs depicting Nazis who operated the Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II. As a finalist for the prestigious 2024 Pulitzer Prize, the play serves as a poignant companion to the film “The Zone of Interest,” focusing on the perpetrators of this atrocity. A museum archivist in the play poignantly states, “Six million people didn’t murder themselves.” Directed by Moisés Kaufman, this production runs:
- Through March 30, Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, Beverly Hills, Calif.
- April 5-May 11, Berkeley Repertory Theater, Berkeley, Calif.
‘Mother Russia’
Lauren Yee’s clever and humorous comedy, “Mother Russia,” transports audiences to St. Petersburg in 1992, where two college friends, Evgeny and Dmitri, navigate the complexities of adulthood amidst a turbulent economic landscape. Having been raised in a Soviet system that left them ill-prepared for the challenges of the new world, the bumbling duo resorts to old habits, taking on espionage for a client on a defected former comrade. Directed by Nicholas C. Avila, this world premiere offers a fresh perspective on a pivotal time in Russian history. Catch it:
- Through April 13, Seattle Rep.
‘Sunny Afternoon’
At long last, Kinks enthusiasts in North America can enjoy “Sunny Afternoon,” a vibrant jukebox musical celebrating the iconic British band. With an original story and music by Ray Davies and a book penned by Joe Penhall (“The Constituent”), this production chronicles the Kinks’ rise to fame. Winner of the Olivier Award for Best New Musical in 2015, this engaging retelling features classic hits such as “You Really Got Me” and “Lola.” Directed by Edward Hall, who helmed the original production, this show runs:
- Through April 27, Chicago Shakespeare Theater.
‘Uncle Vanya’
In Simon Godwin’s latest staging of Chekhov’s beloved comedic drama, “Uncle Vanya,” Hugh Bonneville, known for his role in “Downton Abbey,” takes on the titular character. Bonneville’s portrayal captures the essence of a man grappling with the realization of a life spent laboring for the glory of his celebrated brother-in-law, played by Tom Nelis, while neglecting his own aspirations. Featuring a compelling adaptation by Conor McPherson, this production includes John Benjamin Hickey as Astrov, the environmentally conscious doctor. Don’t miss this engaging performance:
- March 30-April 20, Shakespeare Theater Company, Washington, D.C.
